Waseda University Faculty of Science and Engineering Recruitment Information for the March 2016 Tenure Track Faculty Position

Waseda University is seeking to further enhance the teaching and research environment it provides. In particular, the University is working to establish a research framework that enables young researchers to demonstrate their flexible thinking, capabilities, and talent to the full.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering of Waseda University is currently recruiting young researchers (so-called ‘tenure track faculty’) in the following research field under the tenure track program*.

1. Research Fields and Number of Positions

The program seeks to recruit those who will undertake research on highly creative themes that have the potential to identify issues for the future, and carve out new fields of study.

3. Application Qualifications

Applicants must meet all of the following qualifications:

  • Persons with a doctorate obtained within 10 years at the time of the application deadline
  • Persons under 40 years of age at the time of the application deadline
  • *This is because this project will be supported by the grants of “Program to Disseminate Tenure Tracking System” by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
  • Capable of lecturing in both Japanese and English
  • Applicants from those who have research and educational experience at another institution or organization are especially encouraged.

  • 4.Duties

    Promotion of advanced and creative research activities, educational activities, and other responsibilities pertaining to management and operation of the departments to which the tenure track faculty belong

    5. Starting Date of Employment

    March 1st, 2016

    • Starting date could be changed depending on individual situation.

    6.Period of Employment

    Five years from the starting date of appointment. (From March 1, 2016 to February 28, 2021)

    • In the event that an employment contract as faculty without tenure (except assistant professor) with the university has been signed after April 1, 2013, and the contract will continue up to the date of the new employment, it is possible that the employment duration may not be the same as the duration stated above.

    7. Promotion of full-time Faculty

    The tenure track faculty’s research and teaching performance will be subject to interim appraisal by academic year 2018, and final appraisal by academic year 2020. If the tenure track faculty member is judged to be eligible, he or she will be employed as tenured (full-time) at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. It is intended to employ with tenure status about 90% of tenure track persons. Please refer to the following evaluation standards for hiring a tenured person.

    8. Place of Work

    The work shall be in principle performed at a Waseda University Campus.

    9. Employment Conditions

    Working Hours The employee shall, in principle, appear for work 4 days a week (a minimum of 30 hours/week).
    Salary A salary will be paid in accordance with Waseda University regulations.
    Allowances A commutation allowance shall be provided in accordance with Waseda University regulations. Summer and Year-end Bonus Compensation and Severance/retirement benefits shall not be provided.
    Holidays Sundays, New Year holidays, legally recognized public holidays, and the anniversary of the University founding, excluding holidays prescribed as instructional days that are determined in advance by the University
    Leave Leave that is determined by the Labor Standards Act and other related laws, and days that are designated by the University as leave days: New Year’s holidays and summer vacation.
    Social Insurance The employee shall be enrolled in the Employee's Pension Insurance, Health Insurance, Workmen's Accident Compensation Insurance, and Employment Insurance.
    Research Expenses Start-up research funding can be provided after taking into consideration the content and progress of the research.

    10. Selection Procedure

    Selection process consists of three stages: Document screening (September 2015) and two interviews (October and November, 2015). Further details will be informed to the successful applicants of each selection stage.

    • Letters of recommendation (optional, no more than two) should be written in the specified form and must be directly sent to tenure-track-sci AT list DOT waseda DOT jp by the recommending persons by the application deadline.

    • Please note that the application documents (1) and (2) above cannot be accepted by e-mail, post or any other measures except for submitting through the Online Registration Form.
    • The documents will be printed in black and white at the selection stages, so attention must be paid to their legibility.
    • References of the Online Registration Form should be filled in with affiliation, title / position, phone number, email address of three referees who meet the requirements below.

      Three referees should be from outside Waseda University, at least one of whom should be from institutes overseas.

    • Referees written on the Online Registration Form may receive inquiries, regardless of submitting letters of recommendation.
    • Submitted documents will only be used for the purpose of screening candidates.
